Green Rise of the Beasts Figures Coming

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1658393310/rise-of-the-beasts-series-1/posts/1092504
Via Kickstarter -  Army Green Color Samples and new characters in the works!

The Rise of the Beasts line actually came out this year, and not a moment too soon. The figures are quite good, and two of them have taken up semi-permanent residence on my desk. And apparently they're going to go green shortly.  The posting also makes reference to 4 new characters, which I am certainly looking forward to seeing.

Review: Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Scorpion - Flesh

Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Scorpion - Flesh Action FiguresIt's Christmas, so let's look at something that I didn't necessarily originally want. The 60mm Scorpion - Flesh is one of three unpainted figures from the initial runs of these molds, and dagnabbit, it's pretty good. Creator Jon Karis runs LittleRubberGuys.com, which covers the male action toy figures that are too small to be deemed "action figures" by the serious (read: boring) adult collector. It's a wonderful site and a great resource, mostly because this is where you're going to see Japanese capsule figures or American Garbage Pail Kids figures early - it's not wildly active, but it's one of those sites that I personally find informative and useful. The biggest success in that little rubber figure space is, in the eyes of many American fans, Mattel's M.U.S.C.L.E. - and this figure (as well as his Rhino companion) are a tribute to that classic line of toy figures.

Review: Four Horsemen Gothitropolis Cardinus Action Figure

Four Horsemen Gothitropolis Cardinus Action FigureGenerally speaking most Kickstarter toys have one exclusive-to-early-backer figure, but not Gothitropolis. The Four Horsemen took about eight extra months to deliver Cardinus and his friends, and during this time those who neglected to support the line on Kickstarter could pre-order figures at a slightly higher price. All of these save for one pre-sold out, so at this point it looks like if you want these figures and didn't pre-order them, you're out of luck. Given how long some of the Horsemen Glyos-compatible figures stuck around this is probably a wise move, but seeing how wonderful these figures are I'm sure more than a few of you are going to read this review with some anger and hope of schadenfreude. Despite delays, high costs, more delays, and the Horsemen flat-out saying figures may have problematic joints I experienced no problems with Cardinus (and as of my writing this, I'm still opening the other figures) save for the spare feet. The alternate claws had a stuck joint, but this was easily remedied by my favorite Boiling Water Trick.

Rise of the Beasts Prototypes on eBay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261689778001http://www.ebay.com/itm/251745961250
Two Rise of the Beasts prototypes are on eBay now - they're getting expensive, but they're pretty slick (and I hope they might be the basis of a future mass-produced run someday).   Click here for the Scorpion, and click here for the Rhino.

Trent added more stuff to Shapeways! The newest Combat Creature is Unlikeable Unicorn, who looks like a lot of things we won't mention here for various reasons.  Joining her are Chaotic Ceratopsian and Feckless Fruitfly, each of which is around $16.50-$19.  Or 20% off, if you order in the next 50 minutes.

Rise of the Beasts Army Packs with Mail-In Figure Bundles

http://www.littlerubberguys.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=218096
The Rise of the Beasts line added a series of bundles today for your troop building needs.  The mail-in figures are bundled with a group of the standard figures, so if you want to pick which ones you get you can snag them - the catch is that you have to buy 10 of a figure, but for customizing this might not be a bad move.  Click here for more details and click here to order yours.

Review: Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Bal Kharn - Metallic Black Rhino with Grey Paint

Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Bal Kharn - Metallic Black Rhino with Grey Paint Action Figures
I'm a sucker for small, simple toys - especially when they're cheap or weird quasi-artisanal things. Bal Kharn - Metallic Black Rhino with Grey Paint is the first mass-produced painted version of this mold to go on sale, and it's pretty nice - much like the scorpion, the paint applications are pretty amazing, even for the Glyos factory. It's a small, 60mm-scale toy but it's worth noting that these tiny eyes and the nose horn are tough to paint well. The Glyos factory seems to have paint masks down to a science, while other miniature toys (even the original Battle Beasts could get pretty sloppy here and there. Perhaps it's the smaller runs, or a stricter attention to quality control where the savings are passed along to you.

http://littlerubberguys.storenvy.com/
The Little Rubber Guys Store has gone live with the first batch of Rise of the Beasts.   3 mono color versions and 1 painted version can be bought right now.  The gold and silver painted figures are mail-in premiums, send in 10 stickers and you'll get a random one for free.  (They are stunning.)

Review: Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Cahriv - Metallic Black Scorpion with Orange Paint

Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Cahriv - Metallic Black Scorpion with Orange Paint Action FiguresOne of the advantages of covering small lines is that the people behind them, at times, are super cool and will sell figures to the press early. The Cahriv - Metallic Black Scorpion with Orange Paint is the only painted Scorpion on sale to the general public, but there are a grand total of five of this guy so far. There's a gold promo figure (reviewed here) in addition to an unpainted flesh figure, an unpainted black metallic figure, plus two more mail-away figures - a silver figure with painted bits, and a black figure with painted bits. They're pretty stunning.

This figure goes on sale on November 15.

Review: Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Minifigure Test Shots

I've been sitting on this one for a while - I wasn't sure when the line was hitting, and I wanted to wait until we knew it was or wasn't coming - good news is, they're coming this month! This was written nearly a year ago when the future was looking a little murky. As such, please keep that in mind when you read it, that you're getting my first impressions of prototypes from December, 2013!

Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Action Figure Test Shots
As of when I write this (Christmas Eve, 2013) I do not know when this will be posted or if this will be posted. The gent behind Rise of the Beasts, a line of minifigures which was on Kickstarter, ended and was canceled, and has been through numerous hurdles. Well, that's sort of generous - basically we've heard of numerous factory change-ups, bad sculptors, and other things causing these figures to just plain not come out. As such I was more than a little surprised to have seen a box of these figures on my doorstep, each representing different stages of development. There's a tall lion, roughly 3-inches tall with a weapon and no articulation. The other figures are shorter, at about 2 1/2-inches high - just a smidgen shorter than a Beast Saga figure and taller than your vintage Battle Beasts. The rhino has no accessories and no articulation, while the dark grey scorpion arrived in pieces - the arms, tail, neck, and legs were all separate pieces.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Armorvor Rig Crew Mimic Action Figure

Onell Design Glyos Armorvor Rig Crew Mimic Action FigureThe Armorvor Rig Crew Mimic was the final painted wolf headed Armorvor, complete with orangey colored fur. He's not the first one to be close to that color, but he is in fact the last! I appreciate the finality, as the mold is starting to feel old if you're a long-time card-carrying member of the Glyos cult and I'm not sure if the line has fans who aren't more or less on board with buying new figures every few weeks.

Combat Creatures In-Hand Pictures - Pretty Fantastic

If you're like me you don't much want to buy 3D printouts because you're someone who loves toys from molds that are spit out in China or whatever.  Well, Trent Troop posted two Combat Creatures photo dumps to Tumblr showing off the latest batch and dammit, they're good.

This post has some comparison shots and turnarounds of the new guys.

He's new! Radioactive Roach is Trent Troop's latest creation on Shapeways.  This Combat Creatures figure comes in colored sandstone so far, with more color and variety in design than most of the others.  Note an added radioactive symbol on his left gauntlet.

New Beasts: Rise of the Beasts Tentatively Set for November 15 Release

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1658393310/rise-of-the-beasts-series-1/posts/1029169?at=BAh7CDoMcG9zdF9pZGkDMbQPSSIIdWlkBjoGRVRpAyWFEkkiC2V4cGlyeQY7BlRJIhgyMDE0LTExLTI1IDAxOjUzOjM1BjsGVA%3D%3D--3ec7106e1564d979d8e41d802b1eaa4782503936
Since their reveal a few years ago, people have been asking "So did those Rise of the Beasts figures ever get made?" The answer is yes - this Kickstarter update shows the production thus far, and puts forth a tentative November 15 release date in the Little Rubber Guys store.

The figures transitioned from just another figure line to a Glyos-compatible series with the requisite recolors.   They're also quite cheap - $4 per unpainted figure (black, gold, flesh) or $7 per painted figure (1 of each style).  So that's 8 figures you can buy.

More surprisingly - agonizingly so - are four bonus painted mail-in redemption figures.  Buy 10 figures, submit 10 special stickers, and get a random figure.  One is pictured here - they're pretty frustratingly gorgeous and I hope they consider selling them outright, because I'd pay for a set.

Review: Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Rhino and Scorpion

Plastic Imagination Rise of the Beasts Rhino and Scorpion Gold Action FiguresAs of when I write this, I don't know much about the long-gestating Rhino and Scorpion. Prototypes for these and other 2 1/2-inch scale mini figures have been around since Rise of the Beasts was a Kickstarter project back in early 2012. Creator Jon Karis assured me that the line would come to fruition and I have to admit I had my doubts - but the figures are here! And they're pretty good - painted samples exist, as do flesh figures and a sort of a bone-colored sample. No on-sale date is known, but backers were given their choice of figures as a promo piece - the original plan was for a golden lion, which is not in the immediate future plans.

See Three New Combat Creatures - Stab-Happy Stegosaur!

Trent Troop's Octavirate Forge has added three new Combat Creatures - and they're pretty spectacular.
http://www.shapeways.com/model/2754036/stalwart-styracosaur-colored-sandstone.html?materialId=26

Stalwart Styracosaur was shown previously, but now you can get one.  The full color sandstone version is $12.37.

http://www.shapeways.com/model/2754037/atomic-allosaur-colored-sandstone.html?materialId=26

Atomic Allosaur is also up for grabs at $17 for full-color sandstone.

http://www.shapeways.com/model/2751821/stab-happy-stegosaur-color-sandstone.html?materialId=26

Stab-Happy Stegosaur is my favorite.  He's $11.82 and clearly the best of them - so get one, if you dare!

Combat Creatures - Fetid Fly

http://www.shapeways.com/model/2733475/fetid-fly-colored-sandstone.html?materialId=26
New from Trent Troop, it's Combat Creatures Fetid Fly!  It feels like a merger of the original Beasts with a little bit of that trashy slimey gross feeling courtesy of a garbage can backpack and some junk on his person.

Click here to get one off Shapeways now.

Also if you're in the market for this stuff, check out this post explaining which materials are best for which functions. Apparently full-color sandstone is not great for articulation!

Muty McFly - New Combat Creature on Shapeways

http://www.shapeways.com/model/2706902/combat-creature-muty-mcfly-parody-figure-beta.html?materialId=26
New on Shapeways from Trent Troop, it's Combat Creatures Muty McFly! This parody figure takes the basic format of the Battle Beasts and twists it into another 1980s icon, mixed with another film creature.

The full-color sandstone figure is on Shapeways now for $10.73 (cheap) in Beta.  The little square icon on the vest is particularly clever, so do check it out.

Bootleg Beast Saga - English Packaging, Poor Paint Jobs

http://www.littlerubberguys.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=199791
Continuing a proud tradition, Beast Saga got bootlegged.  Grimy, sloppy paint jobs that look quite different from the original toys are appearing on eBay and even on the Little Rubber Guys forums (register for pictures, it's free)

The price is high, but the packaging is interesting - all English, it seems, but supposedly paper-thin.

This image was taken from the aforementioned LRG forums, and the one on eBay is a buy-it-now for $21.  If anyone has a cheap lead on a set of these, do let me know.

New Combat Creature - Terrifying Tyrannosaur, Sandstone Rampaging Rex Delivered

http://www.shapeways.com/model/2674775/combat-creature-terrifying-tyrannosaur.html?materialId=26
Trent Troop is at it again - Combat Creatures Terrifying Tyrannosaurus is on Shapeways now for $16-$24, depending on which version you snag.  It's a mirror-flipped redeco of Rampaging Rex, so it's not the exact same sculpt... except that it totally is.  Manufacturing on demand offers some unique capabilities with a minimal amount of work, and "flipping" a figure is certainly a nice perk! Order yours here.

Also, Nick Tyranno on The Allspark forums got Rampaging Rex in Sandstone, and posted some shots - it's worth a look!

Review: Onell Design Glyos Armorvor Neo Phase Action Figure

Onell Design Glyos Armorvor Neo Phase Action FigureThe Armorvor Neo Phase is the end of an era. Along with the Rig Crew Mimic Armorvor, these two guys round out the final run of wolf-headed Armorvors - the furry head goes into retirement and will be replaced by something new in late October. Until then, these two figures - and a fifth run of the super-popular clear colorless version - seem to be available in the Onell Design store. They're quite nice, and if you never picked up an Armorvor I'd strongly advise you do so now as it really is the last chance to get this head outside eBay. Over two years we've had dozens of the little guy, but this is the first and only clear plastic one to feature painted details. The Infection Red and Stealth clear colorless releases are undecorated.

Atomic Allosaurus and Stalwart Styracosaurus from Trent Troop

Trent Troop is a busy guy - in addition to BMOG he's apparently sitting on some designs for new Battle Beasts-adjacent figures that he's trying out on Shapeways.

http://therobotmonster.tumblr.com/post/97403247514/atomic-allosaurus-to-answer-your-questions-yes
Atomic Allosaurus is only on his Tumblr right now, but it's pretty cool.  If you liked Dinosaucers you're probably going "Oh, yes, I like this."  He has an axe hand and is all sorts of awesome.  No release date is known.

Joining him is Stalwart Styracosaurus, also only on Tumblr for now.  He has a mace hand and is similarly really nifty.

Meet Rampager Rex - Shapeways Battle Beast-Compatible Figure

You may know the name "Trent Troop" from various toy projects, including BMOG.  I found out he's been busy on Shapeways, and well, look at a beta project he has up there.

http://www.shapeways.com/model/2627548/rampager-rex-beta.html?materialId=26

Rampager Rex is, apparently, the result of someone reaching in to my dreams and making something great.  5mm compatible arms means you may be able to plug in various Transformers and BMOG weapons, and the look... just look at it.  It's gorgeous.  It's in "beta" and it's $10.88 right now.  And I don't know if I can go on living without one for much longer.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Armorvor Glyaxia Command Mimic Action Figure

Onell Design Glyos Armorvor Glyaxia Command Mimic Action FigureThe Armorvor Glyaxia Command Mimic is a little less colorful than his ancestors, but it brings us a second blue Armorvor - and this is a good thing. Previously we've had an unpainted "OMFG Mimic" and a dark blue "Ecroyex Mimic," the latter of which was a striking figure with dark blue, light blue, red, and silver. This guy? He's got yellow and black. It's not bad, but it doesn't "pop." With the price increase, my guess is we're seeing a pushback against increasing wages in China and other inflationary things.

Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Super Win Deck Impact Set Action Figure Set

I waited forever to order the Super Win Deck Impact Set in hopes of getting it cheaper, which did not work out too well for me - prices on Amazon got real cheap after I sprang for it off eBay, so ultimately if you can get it under $20 delivered you basically should. The idea here is that these are "Burst" versions - just like the blind-box clears - but the trading card says, in English, "Black Ver." on each one. So you've got Killer Shark Burst, Aldyle Burst, and Olrich Burst cast in clear, smokey plastic armor with blue, green, and purple plastic respectively.

Review: Hasbro Battle Beasts Pixilated Pointer

Hasbro Battle Beasts Pixilated Pointer Action FigureMost of what interests me in toys are really old things - like Battle Beasts - or brand-new figures. I went nuts and got as many of these guys as I could a few years ago, including Pixilated Pointer. I'm not a big dog person as such, but this is a fine figure - the 2-inch pooch has jointed arms and a weapon, plus a rubsign sticker. It's awesome. You should get one, or whatever figure best represents your spirit animal.

Beast Saga: Massive Multipack Price Drops

I recently picked up the last 2-inch figure set for my Beast Saga collection, and just a few days later noticed it for sale even cheaper - prices seem to be dropping like rocks on this line, with some items like the amazing 6-pack for under $20.  If you've been wanting to experience this Battle Beasts revival for yourself, there's never been a better time.  Prices might get cheaper, but this certainly isn't bad.

Singles are still hovering around $9-$12, so if you missed your Kangaroo because your favorite importer just never happened to get it, it's a good time to finish that set up too.

Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Rynas Burst Action Figure

Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Rynas Burst Action FigureFamiliarity breeds contempt - if you want a line to get some long-term love, martyr it. Rynas Burst was a clear, almost completely unpainted redeco from Beast Saga, a toy line which I foolishly assumed would be brought over to the USA by Hasbro as they did with Beyblade. I still imported pretty much the whole line, mostly because I was so high on vintage Battle Beasts and filled with optimism for the Minimates that I simply had to have everything - and now I don't feel that way. Because this line burned out quickly I actually kind of miss it, even the clear repaints which I was actually starting to get sick of after the third series. Two more unpainted series were planned, and were mercifully axed before it was too late.

Review: Hasbro Battle Beasts Rainbow Sam

Hasbro Battle Beasts Rainbow Sam Action FigureCourtesy of most toy lines dying out in the late 1980s, the toys made their statement and left a more or less perfect plaything that most kids missed out on. Rainbow Sam was released in the USA in limited numbers, so he can be had for a somewhat hefty but not insane price. $30 is the usual going rate for a loose and complete specimen.

Toys R Us Battle Beasts Discount - $3 Per 2-Pack

New figures are on the way, but existing Toys R Us Exclusive Battle Beasts 2-Packs are $3.00 at select (if not all) stores. At my local store the shelf tags were still full price with the regular price tags - the discount was only visible when you scanned them.

The exclusive set with the moose and bat were gone, but the others - with the bugs, ram, snake, and walrus - were all present. Considering you may never see $3 Battle Beasts again, I suggest picking some up now and/or finishing up your sets while they're cheap.

Review: Onell Design Glyos Ecroyex Mimic Armorvor Action Figure

Onell Design Glyos Ecroyex Mimic Armorvor Action FigureIt's impossible to look at the Ecroyex Mimic Armorvor and not love it. Depending on how old you are, you'll see any of a number of inspirations. Perhaps the blue with red will remind you of some of the "stealth" Iron Man action figures. Perhaps the silver head and blue body will remind you of Micronauts, with the name coming off as a garbled up variation on "Acroyear."

Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Wonderriver Action Figure

Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Wonderriver Action FigureUpon first glance Wonderriver could just as easily be a jokey custom figure as it is the real deal. After the Admiral Turtle, also known as Tarlock, it seemed that Takara-Tomy was going to allow these figures to go beyond the template of "animal in armor" set by the original Battle Beasts toys. Personally, I wish they did a lot more of this - the animal faces were fairly realistic, so giving them hats or other real-world equipment helps to add a little personality. The 1980s figures had those robotic eyes and bizarre coloring, while this wonder retriever seems content to wear a sensible set of armored scrubs. With what I assume are the T-Virus and antidote on the shoulders.

Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Moreek Action Figure

Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Moreek Action FigurePart of the Sky Kingdom, the non-bird Moreek was one of the better designs in this line. The original Battle Beasts Blitzkrieg had a hook for a hand and a cybernetic eye, making this one look a little better for wear. Moreek has cybernetic goggles of some sort, purple armor, and a face that would be right at home in Snake Mountain with Skeletor's evil warriors. The big leathery wings look great, and he has deco on the interiors of his ears as well as his teeth. Takara-Tomy should be commended on a nice job here.

Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Dacker Action Figure

Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Dacker Action FigureWhen I first saw this Beast Saga figure, I didn't know his name. I thought Dacker might be a platypus, but now that I have it in my hands I think it's a regular duck. There was a little yellow duck in Battle Beasts too, but this one is a lot more clever. The 3-inch figure not only has armor that looks like a plane, but he's wearing a flight cap and goggles! As the Beast Saga line went on the people at Tomy put a lot more thought into the whole "animals in armor" idea, so we'd get a dog doctor, or an admiral turtle, or a figure that is for all intents and purposes a cyborg Launchpad McQuack.

Review: TheGodBeast Kabuto Mushi Standard Pearlescent Brown Action Figure

TheGodBeast Kabuto Mushi Standard Pearlescent Brown Action FigureThe delivery on the Kabuto Mushi Standard Pearlescent Brown in nothing short of miraculous - on Friday, orders were placed at 7 PM Arizona time. By noonish on Monday, the figures were delivered. I've been through dozens of releases of indie figures over the last few years and usually, at best, things tend to ship out in about a week. To be shipped by Monday would be amazing, but delivered? In a crazy cold snap in which all sorts of mail delays are going on? That takes dedication - but that's just another day at the office for creator Marty "TheGodBeast" Hansen, who has been crafting all sorts of Glyos heads, prototypes, and hand-cast figures for collectors and others for years now. It's rare to see someone with the collector gene, a keen eye for toys, and tons of talent put out a figure like this but here we are!

Review: Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Ogre Action Figure

Takara-Tomy Beast Saga Ogre Action FigureSometimes a toy line can't surprise you - Beast Saga is one of those lines. If you bought one figure, you know what to expect - it's limiting and liberating all at once, because I knew I'd probably like Ogre before I opened her package.
